Testing Food Waste Technology in TUS

Tony Johnston, TUS

Apr 24, 2024

We are excited to test the new equipment we have purchased across the consortium. Our first purchases arrived in Spring 2024 and they include a Shelfy, a Harp Renewables Home Composter, an Auk, and a Shrooly.

The Harp Renewables Home Composter is advertised as: 'Introducing our innovative composting system: Simply add your food waste and watch as the stirring shaft automatically mixes the waste, creating the perfect environment for a rapid decomposition. Within just 24 hours, the majority of the food waste is efficiently transformed into nutrient-rich compost. You can easily scoop out this compost and use it in your garden or plants, enhancing their growth and vitality. With our system, composting has never been easier, allowing you to minimize waste, contribute for greener living, and enjoy the benefits of nutrient-rich compost for your gardening needs."

We purchased this item following research into similar products which were advertised internationally and we followed up the purchase with a visit to the manufacturing site in Navan, Co. Meath. The company manufactures large scale biodigesters which are exported worldwide.

More information about the composter is available at https://harprenewables.com/harp-home-composter/

Our second purchase was the Shelfy, which is advertised as 'Say goodbye to food waste and say hello to fresh food with Shelfy! Thanks to the innovative technology, with no filters to change, this smart device slows down the ripening process by removing bacteria, microorganisms, and odors from your refrigerator, ensuring you always have fresh and healthy food.

We found this to be a very easy to use item. You basically take it out of the box, charge it and then simply place it in the fridge. You can log in via an app to see how many times the fridge door has been opened, the temperature in the fridge and when it needs to charge next. Very easy to use and preliminary observations are a positive impact on food shelf life but will need to test for our own purposes to establish best practices with it.

The third item which arrived to date is the Auk. It is advertised as 'The fully automatic indoor garden' and 'By controlling light, water, and nutrients, Auk creates perfect conditions, so you always succeed with your crop. No green fingers needed! Auk provides a steady flow of nutritious herbs your body loves. Harvest when you need it, and new leaves will grow out.

This is an indoor growing system with smart features to regulate water, temperature and light. We will take time to test this over the coming months.

Our final purchase is the Shrooly, which we are hoping to take delivery of in June/ July 2024.
